SIM lock

Although the BlackBerry PlayBook is available to buy SIM Free (not network/SIM locked) it is often cheaper to buy it on a contract or even pay as you go, which generally means it is locked to that network. While a hassle for some, it is a good thing for consumers in the know because it usually reduces the cost of the tablet by a lot more than the cost of purchasing an unlock code for the PlayBook.

If you do purchase the BlackBerry PlayBook on contract and then you remove the SIM lock, that doesn't mean the contract has ended. It just means that you have an obligation to pay the monthly line rental under the contract but that you can still use the PlayBook on any network. If you don't have a contract, then that's not an issue at all.

Switching Networks

Switching SIM cards in the PlayBook is especially important if you use this as a laptop replacement when travelling abroad, whether for business or pleasure. As with the iPad, many BlackBerry fans are likely to leave their heavy laptop at home and just take their tablet with them when travelling. However, roaming fees can be excessive for data when abroad, so it's important to pick up a local SIM card or a special roaming SIM card, both of which will require the BlackBerry PlayBook to be unlocked first as you will be changing the SIM card from your normal one to the local one. Of course you may want to change SIMs at the end of a contract, or if you buy the PlayBook from somebody on another network.
